Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park, located in northwestern Uganda, is the country’s largest national park, covering approximately 3,893 square kilometers. The park is famous for its breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife, and the majestic Murchison Falls, where the Nile River plunges through a narrow gorge. The park offers a range of ecosystems, from savannahs to woodlands and wetlands, making it a biodiversity hotspot. The Victoria Nile, which runs through the park, plays a crucial role in sustaining this rich ecosystem.

Overview

Murchison Falls, the park’s crown jewel, is Africa’s most powerful waterfall. The Nile River squeezes through a 7-meter fissure in the Rift Valley escarpment, creating a thunderous roar as it plummets over 45 meters into the “devil’s cauldron.” Visitors can admire this awe-inspiring natural wonder from various viewpoints, with Baker’s Viewpoint offering panoramic views of the falls and the surrounding landscapes. The river’s flow nurtures the park’s lush vegetation and supports its incredible wildlife.

The Park is part of the larger Murchison Falls Conservation Area, provides excellent wildlife viewing. The park boasts four of the Big Five (excluding rhinos), including elephants, buffalo, lions, and unique Rothschild’s giraffes. It’s also a paradise for birdwatchers and primate enthusiasts, with chimpanzee tracking available in Budongo Forest. A boat trip on the Nile offers close-up views of the falls and the surrounding wildlife.

Where to Stay

Nile Safari Lodge

Nile Safari Lodge offers a luxurious, tranquil, and eco-friendly retreat on the southern banks of the River Nile, within Uganda’s largest national park. With stunning views of the river, guests can enjoy abundant wildlife, including elephants and hippos. The lodge is open year-round, with peak bird-watching opportunities in October and November when migratory species are present. Surrounded by rich papyrus forests, it’s the perfect escape to experience the beauty and serenity of Uganda’s wilderness.

Paraa Safari Lodge

Paraa Safari Lodge is situated in Murchison Falls National Park, overlooking the majestic River Nile as it journeys from Lake Victoria to Lake Albert. Here, the river is funneled into a narrow gorge, plunging 43 meters at Murchison Falls, one of the world’s most powerful waterfalls. The lodge offers a perfect blend of comfort and adventure, with stylish rooms featuring balconies and private bathrooms, providing a serene escape amidst the breathtaking natural beauty.

What to do

Murchison Falls National Park offers a range of exciting activities for wildlife and adventure enthusiasts. Visitors can take boat trips along the Victoria Nile to see the iconic Murchison Falls up close or enjoy game drives across the savannah to spot the Big Four – lion, elephant, buffalo, and giraffe. For primate lovers, chimpanzee tracking is available in Budongo Forest. Additionally, enjoy birdwatching, particularly during the migratory season, and visit the historic Baker’s Viewpoint for panoramic views of the falls and surrounding landscapes.
